receive warm greetings from Father Vjeko Center which operates in the small Rwandan village of Kivumu. This is the first issue of our newsletter that we are sending to expand communication with our dear friends, supporters and benefactors.

Friar Vjeko and Saint Anthony

St. Anthony of Padua Fra Vjeko can certainly be counted among the numerous martyrs in the history of the Bosnian Franciscan Province. He was buried in the church he built in Kivumu and in which he served. People gather around his grave even today to pay him respect, show him gratitude, and pray to him. Rwanda is small country with population of 11 million. Because of this, often there is no opportunity to buy land on which to build a school. And if there is any land available, the price is very high compared with the Rwandan standards. The price for our new school is around 70.000 Euros. Father Vjeko Ćurić

He didn’t flee like the other foreigners. He stayed at the side of his parishioners. When refugees from Kigali came pouring here, Vjeko hired staff to prepare them food. He was the only one who concerned himself with the refugees, taking care of them until the very end of the tragedy that befell Rwanda. Read more...

Kivumu Parish

Kivumu Parish is relatively a small with about 60km2 with Christian Population 30,000 within its borders. The area is overpopulated especially if everybody has to live his/her own garden. An estimate of 40-50% of the population can not afford to provide daily meals to their families. Read more...

Small Christian Communities

As a parish we prefer the small Christian Community method. In these groups people learn to help one another. It is actually referred to as Church in the neighborhood where people pray and work together. We put a lot of effort to see that these structures function and are fruitful to them. Read more...
